I had read this story a long time ago, at that time I had nothing from Lovecratf, and if I remember correctly, it seems to me that it was the first story I read from him.
I had printed two sheets containing this story and I still keep them with great affection.
But in this case I have decided to read this book that compiles some of Lovecraft's stories and review in a different entry these terrifying stories.
About the story:
It begins with a person who admits to being a drug addict, but also tells us that he no longer has any money and the drug ran out, he is about to want to commit suicide because without it, he finds it very difficult to cope with this situation, but before doing so he tells us how he got to that point.
According to what he tells us, our protagonist was on a ship in the Pacific, which is captured by a German corsair. However, their captors did not treat them badly, everything was legal, making it very easy for them to escape, which made our character leave in a small boat.
For many days he sailed under the burning sun, and suddenly he realized that he was surrounded by a muddy ground, instead of sea water, pestilent and blackish and in which his boat was trapped. It was very thick but not firm.
As time went by, the water was drying up, that is, the whole disgusting mass was hardening, in a very short time it would be possible to walk on it. And so it was until he managed to set foot on the new ground.
Armed with provisions, he set out on a long journey into the uncertain, the unknown.
On the fourth day he reached a very high hill, could not continue and slept. In the middle of the night he awoke to strange nightmares, and realized how foolish it had been to walk during the day, under the embracing sun.
Continuing on his way, he saw something very strange in the distance, a statue. What was a statue doing in that place? And even worse, minutes later, he sees the worst, a creature that in a crazed way jumped up and embraced the statue screaming and shaking its head.
The next thing he remembers is running to the boat and the rest is confusing, he doesn't even know how, but at some point he is rescued.
"Dagon" is one of those stories that make your blood run cold just because of the idea and the imagination of its creator.
It is true that reading a story several times makes you realize that maybe you missed some detail, or maybe you understand it better.
This story is very short, it has horror, strange creatures, mystery... and I personally have been fascinated by it.
