The first time I heard about this story was from a Simpsons parody where Mr. Burns invites several people from the city to a dinner party, takes them to a remote place and proposes a game. They must escape while he tries to hunt them down.
Well that chapter of the special of the house of horror is a parody of this short story.
The story begins with Whitney and Rainsford traveling by yacht. They both know that there is an island nearby that many sailors are afraid of, but they don't think much of it.
Rainsford comments on how good and fun it is to hunt, to which Whitney responds by saying that it is no fun for the prey.
As it happens, Rainsford wakes up at night when he hears gunshots in the distance, gets out of the boat and gets very close to the edge, loses his balance and falls into the sea.
The yacht is moving away and it is impossible to be heard. He decides to swim to the island and ask for help from the gunman. But what he would never have imagined is that this guy was a crazy hunting fanatic who, having got bored of hunting animals, started to hunt humans, since they made the game more interesting, because they reasoned.
There are three rules in this hunter's game which are:
"It's a game, you see," the general continued gently. "I suggest to one of them that we go hunting. I give him a supply of food and an excellent hunting knife. I give him three hours' head start. I will follow him, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range. If my quarry eludes me elude me for three whole days, he wins the game. If I find him--" the general smiled," he loses".
And in the event that he does not accept, "Ivan" (a terrifying and rather large character) would torture him with lashes.
While it wasn't a story that blew my mind, I did enjoy it. The author plays with fear and not knowing what will happen. At first I had a hard time getting into the story, and even, I had to go back and reread it because I hadn't retained anything haha. But past that the story read itself.
The hunter is indeed terrifying, calculating and unhinged hahaha.
"Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and if necessary, taken by the strong. necessary, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give pleasure to the strong. I am strong why shouldn't I use my gift? If I want to hunt, why not, I will hunt the scum of the earth."
You can easily find the text on the Internet, it is only about 9 pages long and very worthwhile.
